After our Meeting, our first step takes place mostly behind the scenes, this step is Project Management and is the defining, planning, scheduling, and controlling of the tasks that must be completed to reach your goal(s) and the allocation of resources to perform those tasks. Project Management involves balancing the tradeoffs between time, costs and scope to create the best possible end product.
Occassionally clients request integration with existing technologies or third party applications, but aren't sure about the ramifications to their current web project. This work type is used to investigate solutions, install demo programs or libraries, and analyze software to make the best possible solution. If your interested in bringing a new idea to life, without understanding how it may work, then Research into what can be done and how, will be essential for designers & developers.
This involves analysing business goals for a site and coming up with an effective plan to achieve those goals. Having a Site Strategy is absolutly crucial for all website projects, as it is the thinking and planning that all other aspect of the site follow. From the User Interface and Sublte Design Technique's, to well after the Final Product within Search Engine Optimization & Analytics Planning; as well as having a suitable Administration System & Maintenance Program; a Site Strategy ensures that your website won't only look awesome & function properly, but will thrive and help your company grow.
Consider this the "Pre-Design" step; Abstract Design is when I take a Site Strategy or Logo Idea and communicate it in an abstract visual form. This includes drawings, wire frames, site maps, layouts, flow diagrams, and other forms of documentation. Generally most of this step takes place behind the scenes, and gets translated into a 'Draft Abstract Design' which is then sent to the client for judgment before returning for adjustments and rarely a redesign. Occasionally clients will want to be included in this step from start to finish, and though this takes a little longer, it can give the client a little more control over the Final Design. This is not a recomended approach, as the final design may hinder in key aspects.
Logo Design or Branding is the utilization of a graphic design program for the development of a Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) generally from a Abstract Design Drawing or Logo Idea. Alongside creating the actual logo, and determining the colors for the logo, Branding is the process of taking the Logo, Color's, and any other Abstract Design works and creating a collection of the various 'Office Items', Branding them with your new Logo, Color's, & Patterns.
3D Design is the utilization of a 3D Graphic Design Program such as Maya, 3DS Max, or other 3D Software, and the use of Abstract Design Documents to create [a] usable 3D Scene(s). Occasionally clients will request something to be done in 2D, that will be faster & cheaper to do in 3D and convert to 2D, in these situations I go ahead with the faster, cheaper, easier route. 3D Modeling, and graphics in general are my life, I enjoy every bit of the 'work' I do in this field.
2D Design is the utilization of a Graphic Design Program for the development of visual direction or visual design. This includes color theory, use of lines, shapes, texture, and other means necessary for maximum visual impact while keeping web capabilities in mind. Occasionally clients will radically change a Final Design after it is out of my hands, and though I feel sorry for this, there is nothing I can do except put the original design works on this website. On each of the individual gallery pages, you may find 'After Final Design Changes', please vote and comment on these pieces to allow some feedback to the clients that do this and to myself.
Content Development is a powerful way to enrich your web site and meet marketing goals. Creating usable and valuable new content with specific audience goals in mind is the purpose behind this step. Researching Search Keywords on multiple Search Engines on your topic before writing the content, as well as understanding each page's roll in the website, will help ensure that your content is rich and unique to your website. Plagiarism is as serious as ripping off other's images and photography, and I consider it intellectually dishonest to unacknowledgedly use other's idea's, writing, and pieces of work.
Photography consists of handling a camera as the photographer to take photos, as well as Raw Edited, and Edited For The Web in a graphic design program photos that where taken from a camera. These photos should have a specific audience & marketing goals in mind. All Photographer Based Needs Must Be Scheduled.
Motion Production is the use of a designer / web developer to produce motion or video. This includes Flash, Quicktime, HTML5, GIF, and other motion related web & non-web technologies. This step may include the use of 2D / 3D Graphics Programs to Animate the needed work, before finalizing it on the web or into a file format for the web, as well as the use of Programming Tools to get the animation embeded into a web site. Motion Production may also find itself in programming, but generally the work type that represents those languages will be used.
System Administration involves activities performed by a system administrator (or "admin", "sysadmin", "site admin") such as configuring servers, installing operating systems or modules, implementing redundancy schemes, monitoring security configuration, monitorying disc space and other resource use, performing backups, and setting up new hardware and software.
Database Administration includes information level and physical level database design and SQL Tuning
Server Side Engineering is when a programmer uses server-side scripting languages such as PHP to add advanced features and functionality to a web project.
Hosting involves activities such as analyzing basic web stats, domain name registration, domain name transfers, or reasearching other hosting companies.
Production To Mobile is the process a web developer takes to convert production stages and overall cross-browser web site into a mobile based, cross-platform cross-browser web site. This tedious process ensures all major mobile platforms, as well as TV's and Tablets, are able to use your website at any resolution; and that if a web based technology is not usable on any given platform it is downgraded to a usable technology, ensureing the best possble outcome on any given platform.
Quality Assurance Testing is ensuring that expected outcomes match actual outcomes. Testing may include ad-hoc testing, creating test cases, browser, mobile, and platform compatability, or as far as recording simulations of visitors.
Search Engine Optimization is the use of various techniques such as monitoring, understanding, and updating audience keywords, keyword densities, phrases, etc. as they relate to researched Highest Searched Keywords, Phrases, etc. on Search Engines such as Google or Bing. Other SEO can be found in titles for all images in HTML, and a readable keyword heavy caption below any content images, Micro-Data for people, places, things, etc. and many other things that can improve page rank on any given search engine.
